Another week of the Hunger Games Community Read is underway! Thank-you to all who have participated in the Read so far, through reading the book, answering discussion questions, decorating food donation boxes, designing District logos, and answering trivia questions. May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor - and may the best District win!
Many of you are eligible for extra credit by answering the discussion questions posted on this blog. Choose any two of the following questions and answer them thoroughly in at least five sentences apiece in the comments section of this post.
1. When Peeta declares his love for Katniss in the interview, does he mean it? Or is it all part of a show concocted by Haymitch, to make the two from District 12 seem like more desirable Tributes? Why do they need to impress sponsors in this way?
2. Imagine you are Katniss in the final seconds before she rises in the cylinder to the opening of the 74th Hunger Games. What emotions do you imagine you would feel? What evidence is there in the book of what she is feeling and thinking during that last moment before her life is truly on the line? Use a quote from the book.
3. Why does Peeta "throw himself into the thick of things" during the Cornucopia, going against the advice Haymitch gave him? All along he had agreed that he and Katniss should not go for the supplies, but he chooses to do so anyway. Why do you think he went for the supplies and joined with the Career Tributes?
4. What strategies do you notice developing in the early stages of the Hunger Games competition? What would your strategy be if you were in the Games? And why do you think some choose to work together in groups, when they know that only one can be the ultimate victor to come out alive?
5. How is fire significant in the Games for Katniss? What experience does Katniss have with fire in her life before the Games?
6. What prompts Katniss and Rue to come together as allies? Why do they begin to trust each other? How does their partnership benefit them, in the Games and personally?
To get credit for your response, please choose "Anonymous" as your profile in the comments section, and leave your initials and District number at the end of your comment. If you have any difficulty leaving a comment, please contact Ms. Giasson or Ms. Harjula as soon as possible!

1-Yes Peeta means it, they need to impress sponsors so they'll stand out and it's different.
ReplyDelete2-Traumatization, scared, anxious, nervous, and in a way excited. Katniss feels stupid because she was delayed getting out of the cylinder because she was focused on Peeta. "And i've missed it! I've missed my chance! Because those extra couple of seconds i've lost by not...in."
3-Peeta did that so Katniss could get away. I think he went for the supplies so that everyone would be focused on him and Katniss could run away.
4-Hiding, finding water, and making allies are some strategies. I think they work in groups to weed out the weak ones, yet get farther along in the games.
5-Because she was "Katniss, the girl who was on fire". She always hunted with Gale and used her bow and arrow.
6-Katniss likes that Rue resembles Prim, they trust each other because they both have low self esteem and think that they're weak. Their partnership gets Rue farther because she can get food now, and Katniss has Rue to keep her thinking about getting out alive for Prim. Rue is like a push for Katniss.

When Peeta declares his love for Katniss I was so stoked, until I found out that it wasn't fully real. I know that Peeta has a sort of one way love with Katniss at this point because I'm pretty sure he liked her when they first met at his fathers shop, but Katniss isn't aware of this yet. She sees them as just being from the same district. But Peeta tells everyone that he has this this love for her because Haymitch thinks it will be good for them to get sponsors. And Peeta lets Katniss know that it is just for show but what Katniss and Haymitch and don't know is peeta actually does like her. The reason they need the sponsors is because they will be able to send them things in the arena and they will have a better chance of surviving.
ReplyDeleteI would be feeling terrified, I don't even know what I would do. I would have a wide range of emotions such as, scared, nervous, angry. I would have loads of anxiety as well, I feel as though I would be so weak from thinking about it that I would have a horrible start and be killed on the spot or run and hide. But Katniss is thinking about how she has 60 seconds to reach the cornucopia before the other tributes she doesn't want to hide right off the bat " Sixty seconds to take in the ring of tributes all equi-distant from the Cornucopia, a giant golden horn shaped like a cone with a curved tail, the mouth of which is at least twenty feet high spilling over with the things that will give us life here in the arena" (148)

1. When Peeta declared his love for Katniss in the interview, I believe he meant it, but I also believe it was Haymitch who wanted him to confess so they would get more sponsors. It’s definitely a part of a show. If Peeta and Katniss show they’re love, all of Panem will have something to root for. If more people feel and believe their love for each other, more people will sponsor them, which leads to them receiving more supplies/food in the arena.
ReplyDelete6. Since the beginning of training, it was obvious that Rue looked up to Katniss. When Katniss first saw Rue, it reminded her of her little sister, Prim. They came together as allies when Katniss was up in a tree, escaping the Careers who were trying to kill her. Rue was in a different tree and told Katniss that there was a tracker jacker nest in her tree and gave her the idea to drop it on the careers who were sleeping down. That was the moment when Katniss started to trust Rue. They then became allies who made up a plan to destroy the Careers’ supplies down by the lake.
